How Classes Work
At Studio206, you follow a structured curriculum designed to build strong drawing skills through observation, analysis, and practice.
Classes are limited to one or two students at a time, allowing for personalized instruction and continuous feedback throughout the learning process.
From the beginning, you work on major projects while also practicing live drawing from observation during every class.
Project One: The Bargue Drawing
The first major project is a copy of a Charles Bargue lithograph using graphite.
This project teaches you how to accurately observe and reproduce shapes, proportions, values, and edges. Working from the Bargue plates develops the visual skills that form the foundation of all representational drawing.
You continue working on this project both in class and at home. The more time invested between lessons, the more quickly the project progresses and the sooner you move on to the next stage of the curriculum.
Project Two: Cast Drawing from Life
After completing the Bargue drawing, you begin a cast drawing using charcoal or carbon.
Working from a plaster cast introduces the challenge of drawing directly from observation while applying the skills developed in the first project. You learn to analyze light, shadow, form, proportion, and structure while creating a finished academic drawing.
Live Drawing Practice
Every class also includes drawing from a still-life setup.
At the beginning of each lesson, we review your Bargue or cast drawing, discuss progress, identify areas for improvement, and demonstrate techniques when necessary.
The remainder of the lesson is dedicated to drawing from life. These still-life exercises are carefully designed to become progressively more challenging as your abilities develop.
This continual practice strengthens observation skills and helps you apply what you learn in the larger projects.
What Students Learn
Throughout the program, you develop a practical understanding of:
• Observation and visual analysis
• Pencil and charcoal handling
• Value scales and rendering
• Light and shadow
• Form and volume
• Edge control
• Proportion and measurement
• Perspective
• Shape relationships
• Seeing and drawing abstractly
• Drawing from life
These concepts are introduced naturally through projects and exercises rather than isolated lectures, allowing you to learn by doing.
Homework and Independent Practice
Students are encouraged to continue working on their Bargue drawings between classes.
Additional exercises may include value scales, rendered spheres, and other short assignments that reinforce the concepts discussed in class.
These exercises accelerate progress and help develop confidence with the materials and techniques being taught.
Completion
Students who attend once per week typically complete the curriculum within four to six months, although everyone progresses at their own pace.
Upon successful completion of the program, you receive a Certificate of Completion recognizing your achievement and commitment to the study of drawing.
The goal of the curriculum is to provide students with a strong foundation in representational drawing and the skills needed to continue growing as artists long after the course is complete.
